Arts & Crafts

September 23, 2019

Through the years we’ve worked on several reproductions and original creations in the Arts & Crafts and Craftsman (which is also known as Mission) styles.  These are similar furniture styles that trace their roots to the late 19th Century in England and eventually America.  They are classic furniture styles that have withstood the tests of time and changing stylistic attitudes and can complement nearly every other furniture style. Use the Contact Us form on the website, email us at greg@gccustomwoodworking.com, or call us at (847) 280-0182 to discuss how we might be able to create one of these classic looks for you.

Wall Hung Shelf

A Classic Arts & Crafts design featuring simple curves and visible through-tenons. The wood is quartersawn white oak and the finish is our own creation. This is our version of a design featured in Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman magazine.

Arts & Crafts Round Table Top

This round top was created to replace a severely damaged top for an antique table manufactured by the L. & J. G. Stickley Company in the early 20th Century.
The joinery to create this large top is a wedge tongue and groove. It was the preferred method of joinery used during the Craftsman furniture era since it resulted in a strong joint that kept large, thick boards flat.

Arts & Crafts Bookcase

This is our interpretation of one of the most iconic pieces from the Stickley catalogue: the Gustav Stickley No. 700 Bookcase designed by Harvey Ellis. Our client wanted it made of cherry. It features through tenons on the bottom, adjustable shelves, and is a commanding presence even though it has a relatively small footprint of about 36″ wide x 14″ deep x 58″ tall.
A closer look at the through tenon construction of the bookcase.

Plant Stand

A perfect piece to tuck into a room for a plant or light stand. The oak construction features hand-carved dentil molding and a hidden storage area.

Blanket Chest

This Blanket Chest is a classic design. This version is made using cherry wood at the client’s request. The interior can be lined with cedar. It is a handsome and sturdy piece to store blankets, clothing, or toys out of the way. With the top closed, it’s great extra seating.
