The latest creation from GC Custom Woodworking is complete and delivered. This Jewelry Armoire is a unique design of handmade wooden furniture. The client wanted something that was large enough to store her jewelry and has the look of an old friend. Working with her we created a design that fits well in her home while providing enough distinction to be special.
The handmade wooden furniture design features seven drawers with cherry wood dividers for safe storage of jewelry. The dividers are sized differently in each drawer to provide maximum flexibility for storage.
Each side has “hidden” storage for necklaces and is accessed by a push-to-open door. The top opens to reveal more storage, a ring bar, and a mirror. Special hinges are used to support the top, keeping it open to any angle needed, and preventing it from slamming closed.
Much of the charm of this piece is in the final finish. Consideration of the look has to be top of mind at every stage of the process beginning with the selection of wood and how it’s milled. For this piece we used poplar as the primary wood. It lasts. It mills well. And it takes a finish cleanly.
The drawers are made of hard maple and dovetailed for beauty and strength. No finish is needed for the drawers. The maple has all the protection it needs. The interior drawer dividers are hand milled cherry.
In order to get the proper aged look, we applied several coats of traditional milk paint mixed to custom colors. This is a key step since these colors will be covered and then selectively revealed throughout the finish process.
The final coat was gently distressed to reveal the mix of colors beneath. Several coats of lacquer were applied to lock in the finish and protect it. The final step was to apply a high quality furniture wax. The result of these steps creates a warm, comfortable, and aged look.
